Top 51 contracts on roster: David Bakhtiari, Elgton Jenkins, Josh Myers, Sean Rhyan, Yosh Nijman, Royce Newman, Luke Tenuta, Kadeem Telfort, Rasheed Walker, Zach Tom
Total cap hit: $65.21 million (26.6% of total cap space)
The big cap hit belongs to David Bakhtiari at $40.01 million. You can read more about what options the Packers have here and the complexity of the situation, but in short, a trade is most likely not in play, given his contract and uncertain injury history. With this being the final year of his deal, a restructure – which comes with risks, again, with the uncertainty around his knee – may not be in play either, with void years being required and Bakhtiari previously not agreeing to have those added to his contract. Releasing Bakhtiari saves the Packers $20.93 million in cap space.
If needed, the Packers can restructure Elgton Jenkins’ deal to lower his $14.42 million cap hit. Releasing Royce Newman also saves $1.06 million. Caleb Jones is an exclusive rights free agent and will be back for 2024.
You’ll also notice that Yosh Nijman is listed even though he is a free agent. Last offseason, when signing Nijman to a restricted free agent deal, the Packers used void years to lower his 2023 cap hit. Even if Nijman is playing elsewhere in 2024, which I would guess is the case, he will leave behind a $2.54 million dead cap hit.
The interior offensive line is very much in need of depth, and my guess is the Packers add to tackle in the draft as well. The question of when is dependent upon whether they want the option to move Zach Tom inside – I’m thinking they won’t – how much competition they want for Rasheed Walker, and whether they believe Jones and/or Luke Tenuta can provide that competition or be reliable backups.
