Jones had a career year in his second season with the Bears, where he came alive as an interior pass rusher following the addition of Montez Sweat to the fray. Jones proved to be a solid three-technique in Matt Eberflus’ defense, totaling a career-high 4.5 sacks, 49 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and a career-high 17 QB hits. We already know that Jones fits the mold of what Eberflus is looking for in his three-tech, and he proved to be a reliable asset starting in all 17 games and playing nearly 70 percent of defensive snaps, the most along Chicago’s defensive line.
The Bears have pressing needs across the board, including edge rusher, center, wide receiver, safety and tight end. If those positions take priority over defensive tackle this offseason, re-signing Jones to another two-year deal would give them an opportunity to address the position the following offseason while retaining a key contributor who made strides last season in Jones. But they also have the salary cap space to go out and land a top upgrade in Madubuike or Wilkins if they choose.
