FantasyPros compares Michigan football QB J.J. McCarthy to John Elway

Michigan football fans are not surprised to see former quarterback J.J. McCarthy getting a ton of hype entering the NFL scouting combine. It went from analysts not giving the national championship winner much love to suddenly seeing McCarthy make a meteoric rise which could have him going as high as the top 10 in the 2024 NFL draft.

Now an analyst from FantasyPros is making a comparison for McCarthy that puts him in line with one of the all-time greats.

Thor Nystrom appeared on his podcast and said that the player who McCarthy resembles most is none other than Denver Broncos legend John Elway.

“The bonanza comp for McCarthy — I probably shouldn’t even say this, but this is what I believe — the bonanza comp for McCarthy is John Elway,” Nystrom said. “You don’t see guys that are just good out of the pocket, off-platform, making decisions under duress out there, he can move the pocket with the bootleg concepts like that. Where the accuracy is so good down to the third level of the field, even to the opposite hash the other way, even when this guy is throwing on the run.

“He will attempt throws that other guys don’t have the vision to even see. Even if they did, they wouldn’t have the gumption to attempt it. Certainly wouldn’t have the arm to do it.”

That’s pretty lofty praise — and we don’t disagree with it.
