Is Isaiah Wynn a one-and-done in Miami?

The Miami Dolphins have 29 players who are expected to hit free agency in March, including an offensive lineman who missed most of the 2024 season – Isaiah Wynn.

Wynn, 28, was originally selected by the New England Patriots with the 23rd overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft following a collegiate career at Georgia that included a First-team All-SEC final season.

Beginning his career as a tackle, Wynn tore his Achilles in the preseason of his rookie year, forcing him to miss the remainder of the season. Over the course of his rookie contract, he appeared in just 43 of the team’s 82 possible games. When he was in, he was serviceable, but he struggled to stay on the field.

Last offseason, Wynn signed a one-year, $2.3 million with the Dolphins to be the team’s left guard. Again, during the first seven games of the season, he was fine at the position (despite posting a career-low 47.8 grade from Pro Football Focus – good for 66th among all guards), but injuries once again cost him the chance to build on anything.

A quad injury during the first offensive series of Miami’s Week 7 battle with the Philadelphia Eagles knocked him out for the remainder of the 2023 season.

Now, as he’s set to become a free agent, the Dolphins have a decision to make. In fact, they have multiple to make on the offensive line alone, as center Connor Williams and right guard Robert Hunt are set to be free agents as well.

Wynn will likely be getting another one-year contract in 2024 worth less than the $2.3 million he made last year. That’s not a bad deal, but Miami can’t re-sign him to be the team’s starting guard. If they want to bring him in as depth or someone to maybe play a few games (emphasis on a few) before a rookie is ready to take over, that might be a move that’s worth some thought.

But, if they are truly looking for a starting left guard in free agency, Wynn has proven that he can’t be relied on. And, while it may be no fault of his own, it’s just the case, at this point.
