Brian Kelly and LSU have done a lot to address the defensive issues this offseason, but one problem that remains is depth at the defensive tackle spot.
Kelly said LSU is now taking some steps to figure it out, moving offensive lineman Kimo Makane’ole to the defensive side.
Makane’ole joined LSU as an interior offensive lineman in 2021. He was a consensus top 500 recruit and while he was ranked a three-star by most services, he was a four-star in On3’s rankings.
With LSU’s starting offensive line remaining consistent the last couple of years, Makane’ole is yet to get a real opportunity. He played just 26 offensive snaps in 2022 and 37 in 2023.
Backup offensive lineman Kimo Makane’ole is moving to defensive tackle as #LSU looks for depth.
Brian Kelly also said freshman defensive end Ahmad Breaux “will probably take some snaps” inside this spring.

He’s got good size, and if the staff thinks he has the athleticism, it’s the right time to make the jump to defense. Right now, LSU returns just two defensive tackles that played last year: Jacobian Guillory and Jalen Lee.
LSU will be getting an influx of talent at the position from the high school level, but the program can’t count on true freshmen to be ready right away.
Kelly added that signee Ahmad Breaux could also see some action on the interior.
