The Kansas City Chiefs have just been anointed as the NFL’s latest dynasty—and one of the newest hires in Charlotte had an awfully big hand in that.
New Carolina Panthers executive vice president of football operations Brandt Tilis just wrapped up a 14-year stint with the reigning Super Bowl champions. From starting out as a salary cap analyst to moving up the ranks to the director of football administration, the highly-regarded mind crafted up a highly-regarded reputation in what’s become the most successful building in football.
Chiefs general manager Brett Veach was asked about Tilis at the combine on Tuesday, and he talked about his integral role in locking in superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
“Brandt’s amazing. We’re certainly gonna miss Brandt,” Veach said. “Brandt got ahead of that one early. The key in this league is getting a quarterback—and once you get him, it’s securing him long-term. And then having the ability to do things within the contract to allow and provide flexibility. Brandt got on top of that early. He has a tremendous relationship with the agent community. Does a great job, super smart. Gonna miss him a lot. We have some big shoes to fill.”
Tilis and the Chiefs were able to secure Mahomes in 2020—on a massive 10-year, $450 million extension following their victory in Super Bowl LIV. Since then, the franchise has reeled in two more Lombardi Trophies with Mahomes capturing MVP honors in both.
