There’s a new group of coaches working with the offensive line, and they lucked into a supremely talented and productive left tackle from a high-profile college program. Fashanu’s draft stock has been slipping in recent weeks with other draft hopefuls shining at the Senior Bowl and Shrine Bowl practices, and media analysts are starting to nitpick some of his game tape.
The fact is Fashanu didn’t allow a sack in his three-year college career and he just turned 21 in December. He’s going to be a big upgrade over Trevor Penning at left tackle and hold down that spot for a very long time. As for Penning — maybe he’ll move inside to guard, maybe the Saints will try and trade him somewhere else. That’s a problem to solve another day.
