Trio Of Terps Honored With Provost’s Do Good Innovator Awards

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Three members of the Maryland Athletics department were honored with the University of Maryland Provost’s Do Good Innovator Awards on Friday. Head football coach Michael Locksley, Community Engagement Intern Deja Parker and Director of Grounds Alex Steinman were recognized among 57 honorees on Maryland’s campus.

After being announced in the fall of 2023, the Provost’s Do Good Innovator Awards sought out to recognize faculty and staff across UMD’ Do Good Campus who have been hard at work tackling the grand challenges of our time.

In partnership with the Office of the Provost, the Innovator Awards highlight the incredible members of our campus community who create, nurture, expand and amplify social impact throughout education, programs and research, both inside and outside the classroom. These dedicated Terps were nominated by their colleagues who recognized the broad and meaningful impact they create. Over the past academic year, members from the Do Good Campus Strategic Leadership Council reviewed nominations and selected their awardees, with some units opting to fund additional awards.

Michael Locksley, Head Football Coach

Locksley is the founder of the National Coalition of Minority Football Coaches (NCMFC). The NCMFC was formed as a multi-pronged effort to remove roadblocks, increase awareness and spur action toward fair and equitable hiring at all levels of football.

Deja Parker, Community Engagement Intern

Parker and her family sponsor a local nonprofit organization called Reach Inside, Cultivate Everyone (RICE). RICE initiatives include cooking meals for the unhoused community, hosting podcasts, creating YouTube videos, selling merchandise with positive messaging and being role models for youth in the Washington, D.C. community.

Alex Steinman, Director of Grounds

As the assistant coach for the UMD Turf Bowl Team, Steinman mentors students and provides them a unique opportunity to extend their studies beyond the classroom. Composed of students from the university’s two year and four year turfgrass management programs, Alex’s teams have won national championships with both the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) and the Sports Field Management Association (SFMA).
