Taking a wide receiver in Round 1

Taking a wide receiver in Round 1

While many fans would like to see the Titans take a left tackle with the No. 7 pick, comments by head coach Brian Callahan and general manager Ran Carthon made it clear that doing so certainly isn’t a foregone conclusion.

“At the end of the day in the NFL, it’s about scoring points and having people that can score points is important,” Callahan said, per ESPN’s Turron Davenport. “When all things are equal, guys that can score touchdowns tend to make more of an impact.”

The good news is, this is a deep tackle class, so the Titans could still land their left tackle of the future if they decide to go receiver first, something the team should 100 percent do if Notre Dame’s Joe Alt isn’t on the board.

Of course, trading back in that scenario isn’t a bad idea, either, but I doubt the Titans would do that if Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers or Rome Odunze are still on the board. To be clear, I highly doubt Harrison Jr. will be there at No. 7, so it’s really Odunze or Nabers in that scenario.

All that said, here’s our post-combine mock draft, with the focus on taking a wide receiver in Round 1. We utilized the Pro Football Network mock draft simulator and only proceeded after Alt was off the board.

Paul is raw and will need some development, but that’s what having an elite offensive line coach like Bill Callahan is for. The Houston product is a great athlete and should check all the boxes the Titans need at left tackle once he gets acclimated. Tennessee might need a stopgap option at left tackle in this scenario.
