The first big free agency splash for the New England Patriots came in-house with the team extending tight end Hunter Henry to a three-year, $30 million deal on Friday.
It’s obviously a smart move for the Patriots considering they were entering free agency with none of their rostered tight ends under contract. Henry, Mike Gesicki and Pharaoh Brown were all playing on expiring deals. However, the Patriots worked hard to extend Henry, who rose to the ranks of a team captain in the 2023 season.
The veteran tight end finished the year with 42 catches for 419 yards and a team-high six touchdowns. There were obviously plays left on the field with Henry playing in one of the worst offenses in the NFL last season.
But there’s hope that change could be on the way with the team potentially going after a top-tier rookie quarterback with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft. Keeping Henry on the roster will give the future signal-caller a reliable security blanket right out of the gates.
