3 phases of free agency for Cowboys fans

The healing cannot begin until the fans hit the acceptance phase. About 10 days into free agency, when most of the high profile guys are off the market and the cost to sign players comes down, Cowboys devotees just go ahead and accept their favorite team won’t be signing much help.

It’s also the time when the Cowboys usually make their move and sign role players to fill roster holes. That brings out the sarcastic social media posts about the team finally entering free agency. If that’s the case again this year and Dallas signs the 18th-best defensive tackle available, the tone will be β€˜this is what Jerry Jones meant by all-in.’

This is a sad phase. When the team confirms what fans already knew, the Cowboys weren’t going to be assertive in finding quality talent, it hits hard.

But with acceptance also comes a silver lining, the pain is over. Fans can now start to look forward to the draft, where a whole new slew of emotions arrive.

After the overreactions from the draft settles comes training camp, when hope springs eternal, and all is forgiven. Fans will flock to Oxnard, California to watch the Cowboys prepare for the season.

It’s that acceptance that comes from being a Cowboys fan; knowing the offseason plan, watching it unfold, being upset, and yet coming back for another year of it all in September.

Being a Cowboys fan is tough, being put through the emotional ringer for an entire year without much payoff isn’t for the faint of heart. That process begins again with free agency.
