Cleveland Browns linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah posted a public goodbye to his former running mates Anthony Walker Jr., and Sione Takitaki. Walker Jr. signed to the Miami Dolphins, and Takitaki signed to the New England Patriots.
The pair of former Browns were Owusu-Koramoah’s mentors when he entered the NFL. The two veterans took the young linebacker underneath their wings and helped prepare him for the league.
It’s bittersweet when players leave an organization they’ve positively impacted. While they’re leaving for more money and better opportunities, it’s still hard to say goodbye.
Seeing Owusu-Koramoah publicly acknowledge his teammates in an Instagram sendoff is refreshing. NFL teams are so much more than their sport. They’re an opportunity for coworkers to become friends and family. Those personal connections are responsible for organizations becoming resilient.
The Browns’ success this past season was due to the bond between players, not because of a scheme one of the coaches devised. The team trusted each other and fought for each other. That is the only way they could survive in the face of so many injuries.
It’s now time for Owusu-Koramoah to ascend as a leader. He must show future Browns linebackers the way, just as Takitaki and Walker Jr. showed him. He must become the leader in the linebacker meeting room in his next step to NFL stardom.
