Ravens GM shuts down Deebo Samuel trade report

A report surfaced recently that the Ravens had inquired with the 49ers about the availability of wide receiver Deebo Samuel in a trade. Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta on Thursday was asked about the report during an introductory press conference for running back Derrick Henry.

DeCosta not only denied the report, but did so in a particularly brutal way.

“I read ‘The Lorax’ last week at a local elementary school,” DeCosta said. “I would probably put that report similar to that.”

Yikes! Not just fiction, but Dr. Seuss fiction!

The Ravens could certainly be in the market for a receiver, but it seems clear they’re not going to go aiming to trade for an expensive, 28-year-old veteran who would likely command significant compensation in a trade with San Francisco. Baltimore is probably in the market for more of a “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” type of deal.

It’s also unlikely the 49ers would be looking to move Samuel given his importance to their offense, and the cost they would incur against the cap if they dealt him before June 1. Doing so would put a $21.7 million dead cap hit on them this year and a $15.089 million dead cap hit on the next year.

Perhaps Baltimore does wind up poking around for a veteran WR in the trade market. For now though it seems as though Samuel isn’t the player they’ll be looking for.
