Stephen Jones was there to talk about the rodeo, but he unsurprisingly got corralled by Cowboys media members to answer a few questions about the utter dog and pony show that has marked the team’s approach to the first few days of free agency.
The team’s executive vice president and chief operating officer was on hand- uncharacteristically clad from head to toe in denim for a time- at AT&T Stadium on Thursday for a news conference promoting the Professional Bull Riding World Finals, set to take place at the Cowboys’ home venue May 17-19.
This year, the event will be extra star-studded with the addition of Kid Rock’s Rock N Rodeo, an event that will marry a bracket-style team competition featuring the sport’s top riders with a live concert from the award-winning singer and rapper.
But most of Cowboys Nation was more interested in getting a first-hand explanation on why the front office has been largely M.I.A. during a topsy-turvy few days of free agency moves around the league, as well as insight on the status of a few high-profile Cowboys players and perhaps a preview of what roster moves may be to come.
Jones was also asked about the new lawsuit brought by quarterback Dak Prescott alleging a $100 million extortion plot against him, brought by a woman accusing him of sexual assault seven years ago. Jones did not comment on that, as there are ongoing investigations in the case, but he did say the team has spoken with Prescott about the matter and it has had no impact on their contract negotiations.
Here are his answers on the other most pressing topics of the week.

“Dak’s been willing to work with us. We’ve had great discussions about him and his contract, and he’s all in on working with us, and we’ve had personal discussions with Dak as well. Other than that, [that’s] about all we’ll say about our negotiations with him; we want to keep those private and won’t get into timelines or anything like that. But certainly, [it’s] a priority of…
