What does the signing of Tyler Huntley mean?

Where it could get interesting, however, is if the Browns decide to roster just two quarterbacks on their regular season roster as they have historically done. This was the case to start last season as well before the injuries started to pile up, then they added a third.

If they opt to roster just two, this means both Thompson-Robinson and Huntley would be cut and only one would return to the practice squad. If someone wants to make a competition out of this signing, this is where it would be found. However, given the arm that Thompson-Robinson has, the glimpses we saw (end of the Pittsburgh game, most of the Denver game before his injury), and the three years of cheap roster control, there is reason to believe the Browns still see the upside to him being the backup in 2025 and 2026.

Besides, if the Browns were to outright cut Thompson-Robinson and stash him on the practice squad, what are the odds he clears waivers without being claimed by another team? The odds are much higher that Huntley makes it through waivers and lands back on the practice squad.

If there was a guess today, I would guess that the Browns take a rare opportunity to roster three quarterbacks in Watson, Winston, and Thompson-Robinson. The Browns would then look to bring back Huntley as their practice squad quarterback.
