And in addition to being excited about playing for the Seahawks’ new head coach, he also wanted to come to Seattle to build on the legacy built by Pete Carroll during his 14-year run with the franchise.
“Just the longevity he had, the culture that he built,” Wallace said. “It was awesome to see the Legion of Boom growing up, watching all my favorite DBs on one team going crazy—Richard Sherman, Kam, he’s from Virginia, Earl Thomas, it was loaded. Just the nastiness they played with, the togetherness they played with, I wanted to be a part of that. It’s just an organization I feel like is only on the rise. I’m trying to be a part of a winning organization, a winning culture. I want to come in here and help the team win so we can have that ring on our finger.”
After releasing Quandre Diggs and Jamal Adams prior to the start of the new league year, the Seahawks will look quite a bit different at safety this year, with Jenkins, Wallace, and perhaps other additions, joining 2023 Pro-Bowler Julian Love and Coby Bryant to contend for playing time. The Seahawks also return three players who were rookies last season, sixth-round pick Jerrick Reed II, a special teams standout as a rookie before suffering a torn ACL in Week 11, as well as Jonathan Sutherland and Ty Okada, who were both signed as undrafted free agents.
“I never shy away from competition,” Wallace said. “I feel like competing brings out the best in me. It’s only going to make me better if Julian Love is out there performing at a high level, and (Rayshawn) Jenkins is out there performing at a high level. I feel like that’s contagious, and I’m only going to feed off that. I’m a guy that knows my worth, I’m a guy that’s going to do whatever I can to help the team win, whether it’s special teams, whether it’s on defense, whatever you need me to do, I’m willing to do it. The safety position is one that’s so versatile. You can do so many different things with it, and I feel like I can add some versatility. I can play closer to the ball, I can play deep half, I can go out there and cover, whatever you need me to do. I don’t want to sit here and say that I’m just this one position, I feel like I’m a defensive back that can play any position you need me to play. I’m just going out there to perform at a high level and trying to win.”
