There is a notable trend with the Arizona Cardinals’ new contracts. They almost all have workout bonuses included.
Under general manager Steve Keim, workout bonuses were not terribly common.
What are workout bonuses? They are paid to players if they attend a certain percentage of the offseason program. A common percentage is 90%. It is the highest percentage an NFL team can contractually request.
Of the Cardinals’ contracts, the most known workout bonuses are for Kyler Murray, who after holding out in 2022 for contract negotiations, had millions of dollar tied up in participating in the voluntary offseason program. This year, he has a $1 million workout bonus on the line.
But it is clear that the organization values players being in the building for the voluntary part of the offseason, especially for players who have not been part of an offseason program.
The Cardinals have added nine free agents who played elsewhere last season. Seven of the contract terms are known. All seven have workout bonuses. The contracts for receiver Chris Moore and offensive lineman Evan Brown probably will have them as well.
In addition, offensive lineman Keith Ismael, who was not with the Cardinals last offseason, has a workout bonus in his new contract for 2024.
Let’s have a look at the workout bonuses due to players so far.

This contract was not done by Ossenfort but it was motivated by Murray’s holdout from the voluntary part of the offseason in 2022.

Arizona Cardinals safety Budda Baker (3) celebrates a defensive stop during their 25-23 win over the Atlanta Falcons at State Farm Stadium on Nov. 12, 2023, in Glendale.
Baker’s reworked contract came under Ossenfort last year after he, like Murray, held out of the voluntary part of the offseason. He is incentivized to come and participate this year.
