Schefter wrongly combined Prescott’ 2024 and 2025 cap hits here. The Cowboys are not going to use 1/3rd of their 2025 cap on a quarterback who won’t be on the team.
The real dead money hit will be $40 million. That’s a result of the various bonus money that Prescott got to begin the contract, and the Cowboys moving several parts of his base salary into bonuses over the course of the contract.
The team will not owe Prescott any cash in 2025, either. Over the course of the contract, the Cowboys will have paid Prescott $160 million in cash, but they’d have only accounted for $120 million of that on the cap by the time the deal ends. It’s not extra money on the cap on top of the original deal, they simply deferred having to account for it until after the deal was over. The Cowboys have used that extra $40 million over the course of the deal to pay other players they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to afford. In addition, using $40 million of space in 2025 is a lower percentage of the cap than it would’ve used if not deferred between 2021 and 2024.
