The month of April is when spring football practices begin coming to a close across the Big Ten as fans will gather in Big Ten stadiums around the conference to get a taste of college football with high hopes for the 2024 college football season, one that will bring another round of massive changes to the entire college football landscape with the next round of conference realignment changes and an expanded College Football Playoff. While spring football practices are important for success in the fall, this is also a good time to hit the refresh button on our look at the future of each program.
Work on the Class of 2025 is already being done around the Big Ten and the nation, and Penn State and Ohio State have done well in jumping out ahead of the pack once again on the recruiting trail. This has typically been par for the course in recent years as the Nittany Lions and Buckeyes have developed a knack for grabbing some major commitments for their next recruiting classes, and their current national recruiting rankings reflect that early success. But the same has not been true for every Big Ten program for a variety of reasons. Michigan, for example, coming off a national championship should be benefitting from a national championship recruiting bump, but the Wolverines are in a unique situation with a late head coaching change likely impacting the program’s recruiting power, relatively speaking.
One of the incoming Big Ten programs this summer, USC, is leading the newcomers at the moment and is on the brink of a possible top-10 ranking, which is not unexpected. The Trojans typically recruit well, and their first go as a Big Ten member will be one to keep a close eye on. But Wisconsin and Iowa are a couple of Big Ten programs currently finding themselves ahead of all of the other incoming members (Wisconsin is also ahead of USC). Will things stay like that? Perhaps not for too long as Oregon gets going.
