As of Thursday, April 4 at 10 a.m. CT, Eric Musselman was the Arkansas basketball coach. Most around the college basketball world don’t believe that will be the case for much longer.
Musselman had been floated as a potential candidate for the head coaching job at USC as far back as two weeks ago, even though the Andy Enfield was still in the gig. When Enfield left to take the job at Southern Methodist, Musselman jumped as legit candidate. Then, when news broke Tuesday that Musselman would be interviewing the job, the smoke proved the fire.
The marriage between the Razorbacks program and the California native Musselman was like many: fair foundational start with a new partner, torrid love affair, a cooling, blame and recrimination. Some couples find their way through such tribulations. Arkansas and Musselman – a marriage in which he definitely took their last name – still may, too, even if all their friends are whispering behind their back, “they’re doomed.”
Instead of an autopsy, here’s therapy. Just how did things get the way they became? Like divorces, one thing didn’t set it off. Arkansas, the spouse, drove Musselman to seek greener pastures as it were. Turns out, he has a lot in common with his ex. And Razorbacks fans, who definitely take the Hogs’ side in this thing, are pretending not to be bothered by the dalliance.
“If he wants to go go California, fine! He can just go! We don’t need him, anyway!”
Even if the marriage survives, imagine the ramifications. Things will never go back to how they were. You can’t love again like that.
Divorce sure is ugly, ain’t it?
