It was slim pickings for Florida football recruiting at the quarterback position until the Gators signed five-star passer DJ Lagway during the 2024 cycle. Which, of course, came after the Jaden Rashada saga; not to mention the Jalen Kitna fiasco as well.
Prior to that, the last major win came in 2020 when Dan Mullen plucked Gainesville local Anthony Richardson out of Eastside High. Graham Mertz has been solid out of the transfer portal, but the Orange and Blue have lacked appreciable depth in the QB room for a while now.
Heach coach Billy Napier knows better than to rest on the laurels of their recent blue-chip acquisition in Lagway and has continued to push hard at the passer position to restore what was once a robust quarterback culture in the Swamp. One of the program’s top targets in the 2025 cycle is four-star passer Ryan Montgomery out of Findlay (Ohio), who visited campus this weekend.
On3’s Steve Wiltfong spoke with the 6-foot-3-inch, 215-pound signal-caller after his stop in Gainesville.

“This visit was big time,” Montgomery said. “I got to see the coaches and players in action yet again in the scrimmage. But the best part was getting this spend some time with the players. Graham Mertz went to dinner with us, and I was able to ask him questions and learn so much from him.
“He is someone I will definitely stay in contact with as he will have a huge year this year and is super knowledgeable.”

“Spending time with players and meeting with the team pastor were things we were looking to do that we haven’t done,” Montgomery said. “We got everything we hoped for and more.”
