What could the Dolphins get in a trade down?

The Miami Dolphins could go a lot of directions in the 2024 NFL draft. While the team lost a few key players in free agency, the Dolphins added more than a dozen of veterans to fill holes.

Now, with the draft just a couple weeks away, Miami is well-positioned to take the best player on the board at a number of positions, rather than be pigeonholed into addressing a certain spot. And that makes the Dolphins a perfect candidate to trade down the draft order.

With a few teams behind the Dolphins potentially desperate to find a missing piece, Miami could slide back and add an extra selection or two. That could be especially enticing considering the Dolphins are without any picks between Nos. 55 and 158 overall.

So what would a potential trade look like? Let’s first take a look at a few comparable deals:

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Chiefs receive: No. 21 overall (used to select Trent McDuffie)
Patriots receive: No. 29 overall (1st), No. 94 overall (3rd), No. 121 overall (4th)

It’d be hard to find a more analogous trade for the Dolphins’ situation than this one. The Patriots slid back eight spots from No. 21 and added two mid-round selections to their arsenal of picks before picking Cole Strange.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Chargers receive: No. 23 overall (used to select Kenneth Murray)
Patriots receive: No. 37 overall (2nd) and No. 71 overall (3rd)

Sliding out of the first round altogether wouldn’t be a dream scenario for the Dolphins. When the Patriots slid down 14 picks to the top of the second round in 2020, it only earned them an early third-round pick in return.

Packers receive: No. 21 overall (used to select Darnell Savage)
Seahawks receive: No. 30 overall (1st), No. 114 overall (4th), and No. 118 overall (4th)

Miami might be more interested in finding additional value in the second or third rounds, but there’s a lot of parallels to their current situation in this deal.

Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

Eagles receive: No. 22 overall (used to select Andre Dillard)
Ravens receive: No. 25 overall (1st), No. 127 overall (4th), and No. 197 overall (6th)

One pick after the last trade, the Ravens slid back just three spots and added a couple more Day 3 selections for their troubles.
