Oklahoma Sooners are ready to send a message to the SEC

The Oklahoma Sooners are stepping into a new era. The college football landscape is changing. The Sooners and Longhorns are moving to the SEC. The Big Ten is expanding and so is the Big 12. Conference realignment has created a new college football. In 2024, we’ll also get an expanded College Football Playoff.

As the Sooners prepare for new challenges, there are some out there that doubt Oklahoma’s ability to contend in the SEC. Some have even predicted a six or seven-win season is in the cards in 2024. That could absolutely happen if the offensive line doesn’t figure things out but the likelihood is very low. There’s a popular thought that the Sooners won’t be ready for the week-to-week grind.

Some, like J.D. PicKell and Josh Pate, believe in what Oklahoma is building. So does transfer wide receiver Deion Burks.

Deion Burks spoke with Chris Plank and Josh Helmer on KREF and said the SEC should be getting ready for their arrival. “I think the SEC should be ready for the OU coming,” Burks said. “I’m not really worried about the SEC. I’m worried about what we have pretty much right now with this team. So, just ready to go after it and see what we can do on August 30.”

Other SEC fans are immediately going to critique his words in that but it wasn’t from a place of talking down on the SEC. He even mentioned in that interview that he wanted to come to Oklahoma because he wanted to play against the best. It was more so of him saying they are focused on themselves and will let the rest take care of itself.

He’s got the right mindset to come in and be a difference maker for the Sooners despite the new challenges. In a deep wide receiver room, Burks has been creating a lot of buzz this spring. And his head coach sees the right stuff.
