Patriots receive: 2024 first-round pick (No. 29)

Lions Receive: 2024 second-round pick (No. 34), 2025 third-round pick, 2025 fifth-round pick

With the Patriots needing their quarterback, they sit and wait to get the best value possible for them. Michael Penix Jr. has a great arm and is very similar to Jacoby Brissett as a pure pocket passer that can sneakily move in the pocket, when necessary. Brissett may be the perfect bridge for him, and Penix has a ton of snaps behind him so it might happen sooner than later into the season.

The Patriots opt to move into Round 1 to get Penix on the fifth-year option, which is a valuable contract for a player who will be 24 when the season starts. They do this by giving up a third and a fifth-round pick next year, but with the trade out of No. 3, they have ammo next year to move up and take a quarterback again, if they feel Penix isn’t the guy.

In this scenario, Penix will likely get some time to earn his keep, and the Patriots will likely use the picks next year to continue to retool one of the poorer rosters in the NFL. Regardless, there is a lot to like about Penix, who is QB No. 5 for me overall.

They also have a coach in Tyler Hughes who worked closely with him in Washington as the receivers coach. He wasn’t directly coaching him, but if you combine what the scouts have seen with what Hughes has seen, maybe the Patriots saw all they needed when the medicals came back clear at the NFL Scouting Combine.
