The Iowa Hawkeyes are always tight-lipped about their work and scheming in spring football practices. Such has been the case once again this year with limited media availability and not much noise coming from the Hawkeyes’ camp.
It is very quiet despite a new offensive coordinator in Tim Lester and questions surrounding quarterback Cade McNamara as he continues to recover from a torn ACL last season.
The Hawkeyes will be rolling out a new offense on Saturday in their open spring football practice and that should give fans their first insight to what to expect from the offense this season. It should also give us our first glance into a key position battle.
ESPN has identified that the wide receiver position is Iowa’s biggest position battle to watch. Iowa is largely unproven at the wideout position and Saturday will be the biggest chance for someone to step up.
Position battle to watch: Iowa needs the wide receiver position to contribute much more under new offensive coordinator Tim Lester. Although the receivers haven’t been the only problem during the offense’s historically bad two-year stretch, it didn’t provide much to change the unit’s trajectory. Iowa returns only two receivers, Kaleb Brown and Seth Anderson, who caught passes last season, as they combined for 33 receptions and 365 yards. Who else has emerged this spring, especially with starting quarterback Cade McNamara still recovering from his knee injury? Although Iowa gets a big boost with tight end Luke Lachey’s return, Lester and the staff need to assess whether they have enough at receiver coming out of the spring, and how aggressive they should be in the spring transfer cycle. – Adam Rittenberg, ESPN
Kaleb Brown seemed to find a spark late last season as he ended the year with 22 receptions, 215 yards, and a touchdown. Every catch and receiving yard came after November 4th.
