Social media reacts to Drake Maye going third overall

There were months of hype leading up to the 2024 NFL draft.

A majority of that hype surrounded star quarterbacks, highlighted by the past two Heisman Trophy winners, Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels; a national championship-winning quarterback, J.J. McCarthy; and ACC standout and yet another star UNC quarterback, Drake Maye.

Williams went first to the Chicago Bears as many expected, but this time with a significantly-improved roster. Washington took Daniels second overall, but there was uncertainty over who would go third.

It didn’t take long to be resolved.

With the third pick in the 2024 NFL draft (ha, I feel like Roger Goodell writing that), the New England Patriots selected Drake Maye, quarterback from the University of North Carolina.

This was a move that gained significant traction leading up to the draft, despite reports the New York Giants or Minnesota Vikings would trade up. New England was in desperate need of a productive quarterback, a bill Maye fits perfectly.

Maye was the 2022 ACC Rookie and Player of the Year. He played his way into Heisman Trophy contention during the 2023 campaign. Maye finished his collegiate career with 8,018 passing yards, 63 passing touchdowns, 1,209 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns.

Maye will look to become the next great Pats quarterback – does Tom Brady ring a bell? Maye’s weapons include tight end Hunter Henry, running backs Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson, plus new acquisition K.J. Osborn, a No. 1 wide receiver candidate.

Let’s look at social media and see what it though of Maye’s selection:
