USC’s Calen Bullock, who played for an Alex Grinch defense in 2023 and therefore was not placed in the best possible position to succeed, was taken by the Houston Texans with the No. 78 pick in the 2024 NFL draft. Bullock had to labor under the burden of being on a defense which was not well-coached. He had to deal with the subpar coaching of Donte Williams in the USC secondary. We have seen how much Taylor Mays and Doug Belk have improved the quality of coaching in that position group since Williams and Grinch both left. Bullock’s hope as he embarks on an NFL career is that receiving better coaching will enable his attributes to jump off the page and become the defining reality of his football life.
