For seventh-round picks to make an impact in the NFL, they almost always need to show value on special teams. Fortunately for Washington, that’s right up his alley.
“Special teams has always been a part of my game,” Washington said. “Coaches have had to beg me over the years to take maybe one off and things like that. Gunner on punt, corner on punt return, kickoff returner, [punt] returner, a lot of history in special teams. I love to compete. Anytime I get the opportunity to be on the field, I want to be out there.”
While he didn’t do a lot of returning in college (22 kick returns, zero punt returns in five seasons), Washington saw 303 career snaps on coverage units.
