Breaking down Los Angeles Chargers’ 2024 undrafted free agency class

Clemson safety Jalyn Phillips (1) reacts after Barrett Carter sacked Kentucky quarterback Devin Leary (13) during the first quarter of the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville , Florida, Friday, December 29, 2023.

Phillips seems like a pure special teams contender, with nearly 650 snaps in that phase in his five seasons at Clemson. With NFL-level size at nearly 6’1″ and 204 lbs with 32 3/8″ arms, Phillips is a sure tackler as long as he’s in position to make a play. But he did run a 4.62 40 yard dash, and his film reflects a lack of speed to hang with vertical routes.

For that reason, Phillips profiles more as a traditional box safety when he does play defense, where he can adequately cover tight ends and shallower zones. He’ll likely get a shot at the backup role behind Derwin James, who defensive coordinator Jesse Minter has said will play closer to the line of scrimmage in 2024.
