Ranking the SEC’s best Week 1 college football games

We’ve found out more over the past week about college football’s season-opening schedule. College football action begins in Week 0 with Florida State playing Georgia Tech in Ireland on Aug. 24. Georgia football and the SEC do not begin play until Week 1.

Georgia fans aren’t particularly happy with the Bulldogs’ noon (ET) kickoff against Clemson in Week 1, but you can bet Bulldog fans will be fired up come Aug. 31. We are still three months and a week from the return of college football, but summer goes by fast and the next thing you know football will be back!

SEC football returns on Thursday, Aug. 29. Arkansas and Missouri both open the season against Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams on that date to officially begin the SEC’s 2024 college football season.

Let’s take a look at the conference’s best games as college football returns in Week 1.

Virginia Tech at Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt is one of five SEC teams to schedule a power conference opponent in Week 1. The Commodores have a chance to make the outcome interesting against Virginia Tech, but certainly will not be expected to beat the Hokies.

Miami at Florida

Date: Saturday, Aug. 31

This will be a very interesting matchup in Week 1. Florida and Miami are coming off disappointing seasons. In 2023, Florida went 5-7 and Miami went 7-6. The Gators and Hurricanes both hope to get off to strong starts in the 2024, but only one of them will win as the Sunshine State rivals open the season in The Swamp. Florida can’t afford to lose this one. The Gators have a challenging schedule, and a Week 1 loss would make it tougher.
