Analysis
When he isn’t being coached by Urban Meyer, and isn’t suffering a new injury on what seems like a weekly basis, Trevor Lawrence is what Jacksonville drafted him to be: A franchise quarterback. Between the Jaguars’ 9-8 2022 campaign and 8-3 start in 2023 (before his, and other players’, injuries began to take a toll), a 28-game span, Lawrence tossed for 6,859 yards, 39 touchdowns and 15 interceptions, adding eight rushing touchdowns.
With Lawrence and current head coach Doug Pederson at the helm, the Jaguars clinched consecutive winning seasons between 2022-23, for the first time since 2004-05 with Jack Del Rio at head coach and Byron Leftwich at quarterback.
After dishing out $188 million in guaranteed money this offseason, a third-consecutive winning season with Lawrence under center is all but expected in Jacksonville. It would mark the second such stretch in franchise history, the other occurring over four years, 1996-99.
Regardless of how Mac Jones’ tenure in New England went, Jacksonville added another former first-round quarterback to its roster this offseason to serve as a backup, for the cost of a sixth-round pick. It was a smart move. With 42 career starts under his belt, Jones is seasoned enough to fill in for Lawrence the next time he gets hurt and has proven capable with a good offensive supporting cast around him.
