Consider the significance of a year. On June 5, 2023, a monumental event took place. Gold-crusted shovels, gripped by individuals ranging from National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell to Bills owner Terry Pegula to New York State governor Kathy Hochul to Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, pierced the dirt.
“We’re going to build a stadium here, right? And we’re going to tear down a stadium over there that’s full of memories,” Pegula said. “So, we need to fill this stadium with more memories and continue our legacy. We should remember the past but embrace the building of our future.”
People seek new memories when they look at the new construction site, but old memories—with even more to come over the next two years—still stare at them from across the street.
The memories: Jim Kelly to Andre Reed dimes, Steve Tasker hall of fame punt coverage, Ruben Brown pancakes, Thurman Thomas scampers, and Bruce Smith record-breaking sacks. It’s, “Where would you rather be than right here, right now?”
