Sam Williams to break out, Wade Phillips still has it

Every year, it seems, there’s at least one Cowboys player who goes from relative obscurity to mainstream stardom. This year’s pick has had plenty of ups and downs in his short tenure but could finally be ready for the spotlight. We’re also talking coaches in this edition of News and Notes: the Cowboys’ current skipper is on the brink of entering rarefied air among history’s best, while a longtime friend of the franchise is showing he still has it, even well into his golden years.

Elsewhere, why Dak Prescott’s contract extension could take a big swing depending on what Jordan Love does, why it’s still way too early to make any proclamation of what the team has in Trey Lance, and how the front office’s offseason strategy toward signing its stars could backfire in more ways than one. We’ll also talk about the youth movement at the safety position, we’ll get into the dollars and cents of Marshawn Kneeland’s newly-signed deal, and we look back at some of the greatest moments in NFL postseason history, including two historic plays involving the Cowboys. All that, plus the team welcomes 300 kids to The Star for a great cause, and kicker Brandon Aubrey gets big news when his teammates help reveal the gender of his coming baby.

The onetime Cowboys head coach- fired midway through the 2010 season- is getting another chance with the UFL’s San Antonio Brahmas. “I don’t think it was a conscious thing for the league to say, ‘Oh, we don’t want to hire him [because he’s too old],’ ” the 76-year-old Phillips said. “I just think they know your age and that becomes part of their thinking. But just look at my record.” Phillips unfairly became a poster child for mediocrity, but his career win percentage as a head coach is one small notch below Kyle Shanahan, whose reputation is that of a mastermind.

McCarthy currently stands 17th on the NFL’s all-time wins list. With just seven more victories, he’ll get to 174 and pass Mike Shanahan, Tom Coughlin, Pete Carroll, Jeff Fisher, and Bill Parcells to be just outside the league’s top 10 ever. And yet, the 60-year-old heads into the season on a very hot seat in Dallas, coaching on the final year of his contract with no guarantee of a job in 2025.
