The Vols defeated Florida State, 23-16, in the inaugural BCS national championship game on Jan. 4, 1999 at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona.
The matchup between Tennessee and the Seminoles featured two Hall of Fame head coaches Bobby Bowden and Phillip Fulmer.
Fulmer was 152–52 during his Tennessee head coaching tenure.
Bowden was 377–129–4 during his head coaching career and won the 1993 and 1999 national championships at Florida State.
