The Kansas City Chiefs relied on their outstanding secondary to lock down opposing passing games last season en route to their Super Bowl LVIII victory.
Though much of the media’s praise for Kansas City’s defense was directed at Trent McDuffie and L’Jarius Sneed, the Chiefs’ depth gave defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo a huge advantage in game-planning, especially late in the season.
Cornerback Joshua Williams was an underrated asset that Spagnuolo was able to rely on throughout Kansas City’s 2023 campaign. With the departure of Sneed earlier in the offseason, Williams may be relied on to see consistent action as the Chiefs look to complete a championship three-peat in 2024.
Check out some key information to know about Williams as he and the rest of Kansas City’s roster look ahead to the new season before training camp kicks off in St. Joseph, Missouri later in July:
Per Chad Reuter on Williams’ NFL draft player bio:
“Williams attended Jack Britt High School in Fayetteville (and spent a year at Palmetto Prep to qualify academically) before coming to Fayetteville State, where he played in nine games as a reserve his true freshman season (16 tackles, two pass breakups). Williams led the squad with 13 pass breakups in his first year as a starter, also collecting 34 tackles (three for loss) and intercepting two passes in 11 games. The Broncos did not play in the fall of 2020 or the spring of 2021 due to COVID-19 concerns. Williams’ play in nine starts in the fall of 2021 earned him first-team All-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association accolades (31 tackles, three interceptions, one returned for a score, six pass breakups).” — by Chad Reuter
From the Chiefs’ official website:
“Originally entered the NFL as a fourth-round draft pick (135th overall) by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2022 NFL Draft.“
16 games played, two starts, 14 tackles, 5 passes defensed
$985,000 base salary, $166,565 prorated signing bonus. Total cap hit: $1,151,565
Williams’ length and ball skills should be a boon for Steve Spagnuolo as he looks to replace L’Jarius Sneed in the Chiefs’ secondary next season.
