Commanders 2024 training camp preview: Wide receiver

Heading into the 2023 season, the wide receiver position was considered a potential strength for the Washington Commanders. You had Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson and Curtis Samuel, which was considered one of the more underrated trios in the NFL.

The 2023 season didn’t go as planned. McLaurin needed the final game to go over 1,000 yards for the fourth consecutive season. Dotson was predicted to be one of the NFL’s breakout players last season. He finished with 49 receptions in 17 games. Finally, Samuel had another solid but not spectacular season. Samuel is now in Buffalo.

Washington’s offense led the NFL in passing attempts last season, but it was not efficient. The Commanders believe things will change with new offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and quarterback Jayden Daniels.

We continue our training camp previews with a look at wide receiver.

Terry McLaurin has waited six years for quarterback stability. Has he found it with Daniels? In five NFL seasons, McLaurin has caught passes from 11 different quarterbacks and is 81 yards shy of going over 1,000 yards in each of his five NFL seasons. Last season was a miserable one for McLaurin, yet he remained a terrific leader. McLaurin is motivated to show that he remains one of the NFL’s best wide receivers.

Dotson had a terrible second season. He acknowledged it this offseason, saying he wanted to be better and expected to be better. To be fair, everyone on Washington’s roster took a step back in 2023 under the former coaching staff. That’s no coincidence. The offense was bad. Receivers often ran routes in the same general area. It was confusing to watch. Dotson has a ton of ability. He gets separation, runs great routes and usually has good hands. He’s energized by Washington’s offensive changes, specifically Kingsbury and Daniels.
