Every year, FCS teams knock off their higher-level Division I counterparts in the FBS. We saw four FCS-over-FBS upsets in the 2023 college football season, highlighted by Sacramento State’s defeat of the Pac-12’s Stanford.
Here are the games in 2024 that could join the list next and should be on your radar.
Week 0
- Montana State over New Mexico
Montana State will open the season as a top-10 — if not top-five — FCS team to open the year. New Mexico only won four FBS games last year. A top FCS team vs. a bottom-tier FBS team is always one to watch for an upset.

Week 1
Buffalo doesn’t have its top two rushers, top wide receiver, top tight end or starting quarterback from last season. While the offensive line and defense are solid, the offensive skill positions for the Bulls leave much to be desired entering the year. Meanwhile, Lafayette returns a Walter Payton Award candidate on offense in running back JaMar Curtis and the reigning Patriot League freshman of the year in defensive lineman Jaylon Joseph. I would not be surprised if Buffalo — a program that’s lost to two different Patriot League teams in as many seasons — falls to the preseason favorite in the conference again in 2024.

- North Dakota State over Colorado
All eyes will be on this game: North Dakota State vs. Colorado. An FCS powerhouse vs. Coach Prime and crew. Here’s why the Bison should have the Buffaloes on upset alert.
North Dakota State has great talent in the trenches, putting out NFL-level offensive linemen almost yearly across the last half-decade. That should help the Bison, who averaged 5.7 yards per carry last season, control the line of scrimmage against a Colorado run defense that ranked in the bottom 17 percent last season.
