5 Camp battles as Cowboys enter Week 2 of 2024 training camp

Chauncey Golston hasn’t been a bad player in his three years in Dallas, but he is going into his final season of his rookie deal, and he hasn’t been very impactful thus far. He has played 47 games and started three times, but has never cracked 20 solo tackles, two sacks, or two tackles for a loss. Experience is important, he has had multiple seasons to build up his physique, and Golston has been versatile, playing as an edge setting defensive end and a penetrating defensive tackle.

Viliami Fehoko is really an unknown, but he is nearly the same size as Golston, and got a redshirt season to live in the playbook ala Tolbert in his rookie year. This battle could be partly a front office one, if Golston isn’t going to be an impactful, rotational defensive lineman then why not give that experience to a player the team has contract control over for three more seasons.

Golston has 47 more games played and three more starts than Fehoko, a coach like Zimmer will value that more than most, but if the size, ability, and impact on gameday isn’t much different, will Dallas just push their eggs into the basket of the younger player that they have under contract past this season to get him the experience?
