Jackrabbit Jenkins’ pick-six off of Tom Brady

Jackrabbit Jenkins’ pick-six off of Tom Brady

We’re continuing our countdown to the New Orleans Saints season opener by looking back at big plays from past highlight reels, and we’ve got a great one for Day 35. We’re turning the clock back to 2020 for Tom Brady’s debut with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which of course came against the Saints with the whole football world watching.

The first half hadn’t gone to plan for Tampa Bay. After going 85 yards for a touchdown on their opening drive, the Bucs managed just 55 yards of  offense over their next four possessions. Their longest drive ended with a blocked field goal. Brady was intercepted by Marcus Williams on a heave downfield, sacked by Trey Hendrickson, and forced to punt twice, so he played it more conservatively coming out of halftime. He went for a layup, dropping back and turning to his right, throwing to his receiver on a simple out route for what should have been a safe completion near the sideline.

It’s just too bad Janoris Jenkins, who also went by his nickname “Jackrabbit,” was there to pick it off. He intercepted Brady’s pass and raced 36 yards to the end zone — giving the Saints a commanding 24-7 lead in the opening minutes of the third quarter. Brady failed to rally his teammates and lost his first game with the Buccaneers, 34-23.

Now I know what you’re thinking. There are 35 days left in our countdown to the season opener, but this 36-yard play is today’s highlight? That’s right. After scouring the Stathead Game Play Finder database and looking for relevant highlight reel clips, we ended up cheating a little and going with one of the 36-yard plays rather than a true 35 yarder. Most of the Saints’ recent scoring plays from this distance either came in blowout wins or losses. This was a good pick for a play that was both immediately impactful and memorable.

So don’t worry — we’ll get back to  your usual programming tomorrow on Day 34 with a real 34 yarder. Stay tuned.
