Former North Carolina Tar Heels receiver Antoine Green has been in a heated battle this offseason with the departure of Detroit Lionsβ former WR2, Josh Reynolds. Jameson Williams took a bump up to WR2 allowing room for a battle between the rest of the receivers for the WR3 spot.
Early in the offseason and into the beginning of training camp, Green looked to be the favorite for the spot with Khalif Raymond filling a natural rotational role. However, 2018 5th-round draft pick Daurice Fountain has made strides over the last weeks.
In his rookie season with Detroit, Green played in nine games pulling in one reception for two years on two targets. That was a wake-up call after reeling in 43 receptions for 798 yards and seven touchdowns in his senior year at North Carolina despite being behind Josh Downs in the depth chart.
βOver the last handful of practices, [Daurice] Fountain has emerged as arguably the frontrunner for the WR3 spot. Itβs a role most assumed entering training camp would come down to Donovan Peoples-Jones and Antoine Green. But Fountain has worked himself into the conversation.

Fountain was a fifth-round pick in 2018 from the Indianapolis Colts. He spent two years there playing in just six games with three targets and two receptions over two seasons. Last year, he was with the Kansas City Chiefsβ organization where he appeared in two games and didnβt log a reception.
There are stark similarities between Green and the Northern Iowa product. With the preseason set to begin, Green is going to need a productive route runner to prove his worth to Dan Campbell and company.
