5 Things to Know About New Chargers QB Luis Perez

After transferring to Division II Texas A&M–Commerce, Perez would go on to have quite the run in the Lone Star State.

He redshirted his first year before becoming the starter for his final two years in college, leading the Lions to two NCAA Division II Playoff berths.

His best year came in 2017 when he led the school to their second National Championship in program history.

Perez also earned the Harlon Hill Division II Player of the Year award after throwing the fourth most passing yards by a quarterback in Division II history (4,999).

Perez is no stranger to Southern California.

The 29-year-old is a native of San Diego, where he stayed in the area until he transferred to Texas A&M–Commerce.

He would attend and graduate from Otay Ranch High in Chula Vista, and play football at Southwestern College, a junior college.

Perez’s journey as a player is quite unique.

The quarterback spent some time playing other positions on his high school team, but never played varsity football at Otay Ranch.

After graduating high school, Perez would walk on at Southwestern and work his way up the depth chart before becoming the full-time starter for the school in 2014.
