Chiefs Steve Spagnuolo’s expectations for secondary in the preseason

The start of preseason on Saturday will be an essential audition process for many Kansas City Chiefs players who want to improve their chances of making the roster.

Spagnuolo spoke more about his plans for the defensive secondary during his press conference after Tuesday’s practice.

“Back end (Secondary) always because we want to see what we have going on. We’ve had some injuries, and then there’s the continuity and chemistry of those young guys who will communicate in the heat of battle,” said Spagnuolo. “Sometimes when it’s controlled here, but they kind of get into a real game atmosphere. The biggest thing is I want to see guys that are unknown to me from the toughness and tackling. Those are the two big things.”

Spagnuolo has made it no secret that he eagerly hopes his young defensive backs will step up this season after the departure of L’Jarius Sneed. He clarified which players he would watch closely during Saturday’s game.

“Yeah, Jaden (Hicks) – all of them really – Kamal(Hadden). You know, even guys that – I mean Ekow (Boye-Doe)didn’t play a lot back there last year, right? Guys that haven’t had a lot of time back there; I’d like to see those guys. You know all the young guys, obviously.” said Spagnuolo. “I mean I told them in the meeting – the guys that I’ve been around that are here, I know which guys are tough and which guys are fake tough. I mean, I’m trying to find out if guys are tough enough to play in this league and do the things we need to do.”

Nazeeh Johnson, Nic Jones, and Jaylen Watson are also players to watch during the preseason to help solidify the secondary.
