NCAA announces penalties for former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh

The NCAA announced penalties for former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh on Wednesday. He was given a one-season suspension and a four-year show-cause order — both if he returns to coaching at the collegiate level.

Harbaugh took the Los Angeles Chargers head coach job earlier this year after winning the national championship at Michigan in 2023.

These penalties result from the completed investigation into his recruiting violations during the COVID dead period and are not related to the ongoing sign-stealing allegations.

In January 2023, it was revealed that the NCAA was investigating Harbaugh for recruiting violations and instead of eventually issuing a Level II, consistent with the violation, the NCAA dug in deeper stating that Harbaugh misled investigators in the process. Michigan attempted to get ahead of it by suspending Harbaugh for the first three games of the 2023 season, however, the governing body rejected the suspension as penance and continued to seek reprisal as it went deeper into the investigation.

This heightened punishment again results from the completed investigation into Harbaugh’s COVID-related recruiting violations that included him providing false/misleading information to NCAA officials.
