In the ESPN article on Nelson, it is clear that the Nelson family and Lincoln Riley remained supportive of each other. Riley didnβt burn Nelsonβs redshirt at USC, and he was honest with the family about Nelson needing time to build back his fitness base after an injury he suffered, which required surgery. Caleb Williams also mentored Nelson as well. USC simply had Miller Moss in line, and Nelson needed time to physically recover. This was not a bitter parting of ways β not at all. Moss was more advanced in his understanding of Rileyβs offense. There was a growing awareness from the Nelson family that leaving Los Angeles for another program in another part of the country would be a fresh β if unexpected β start for Malachi Nelson.
