New York Giants fall, 28-10, to Houston Texans in Daniel Jones’ return

The New York Giants were outclassed down in steamy Houston by the young, talented Texans, 28-10, in NFL Week 2 preseason action.

Head coach Brian Daboll’s objective in the game was to play his healthy starters for the first half, which he did. The Texans countered by playing most of their starters early on as well.

The Giants started an offensive line of (left to right): Andrew Thomas, Aaron Stinnie, John Michael Schmitz, Greg Van Roten, and Jermaine Eluemunor. Daniel Jones was at quarterback with tight end Daniel Bellinger, running back Devin Singletary, and wide receivers Malik Nabers, Wan’Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt.

On defense, Dexter Lawrence and Rakeem Nunez-Roches were the starting interior linemen with Brian Burns at defensive end. Kayvon Thibodeaux was the outside linebacker with Bobby Okereke and Micah McFadden on the inside. Deonte Banks and Nick McCloud started at the corners with Isaiah Simmons in the slot. Dane Belton and Jason Pinnock lined up at safety.

  • The Giants had five turnovers in the game — two interceptions and three fumbles. The two interceptions by Jones were costly. One was a preventable pick-six deep in Giants territory and another was an underthrown pass deep down the sideline for Jalin Hyatt that killed another drive.
  • The Giants ran for 155 yards against Detroit last week but could only manage 74 in this game. The Texans, meanwhile, had 114 yards on the ground.
  • The secondary needs work. The Texans have a league-class receiver group and the Giants had issues keeping up. Houston completed 24 of 38 passing attempts and also had several big plays negated by penalties.
  • The Giants went one of two in the red zone while Houston converted on three of their four trips.
  • Injuries are creeping up on the Giants again. Several key players missed the game and some others were knocked out during.
