After an 11-year wait, EA Sports has finally released a new version of its college football game. Ewers is on the cover of the popular title, along with Michigan RB Donovan Edwards and Colorado WR Travis Hunter.
EA Sports, a division of Electronic Arts, is one of the biggest developers and publishers of sports video games. Following the release of the 2013 version of the game, EA settled a lawsuit brought by former college football players who argued their name, image and, likeness (NIL) were used without permission or compensation. As a part of the settlement, EA announced it would stop producing college football video games.
But following the 2021United States Supreme Court case NCAA. v. Alston, which deemed the NCAA’s precedent of avoiding compensating athletes impermissible, EA developed a new version of the game. At launch, the game attracted more than 2.8 million players.
Again, terms of the Ewers deal haven’t been disclosed. EA pays each athlete a flat $600 payment and a copy of the game for allowing the NIL to be used. You can bet Ewers is making more by being on the cover. Plus, the exposure and hype generated this summer has been through the roof.
