Final prediction before cutdown day

Final prediction before cutdown day

The next three days are going to be some of the toughest for hundreds of players across the NFL. Teams will trim their rosters from 90 to 53 players before 4 p.m. ET on Aug. 27, meaning a huge number of NFL hopefuls will be without a job.

The Los Angeles Rams have an especially deep roster that’s loaded with young talent, which will only make decisions for Sean McVay and Les Snead that much tougher. Several undrafted rookies stood out in the preseason and are on track to make the team for Week 1, while others struggled and will be cut in the coming days.

With cutdown day approaching, here’s our latest projection for the Rams’ 53-man roster. Two players, Jimmy Garoppolo and Alaric Jackson, will not take up roster spots due to their two-game suspensions, which opens the door for others to make the team initially. Then there’s someone like Tyler Higbee, who will remain on the PUP list and also will not take up a roster spot.

Stetson Bennett

Sean McVay committed to Bennett as the Rams’ backup quarterback for the first two weeks of the season on Saturday, which means he’s certain to make the 53-man roster. He didn’t play well in the preseason but he did enough to land a roster spot. Jimmy Garoppolo will be back on the team in Week 3, at which point the Rams will have a decision to make with Bennett.

Boston Scott

It’s a toss-up between Scott and Zach Evans for the final running back spot. Neither played particularly well in the preseason finale, but it was Scott who created more big plays over the course of the summer. I’ll give him the nod here over Evans, though it wouldn’t be surprising if McVay went the other direction.

Scott also provides special teams value as a returner.

Tyler Johnson
Xavier Smith

The top five receivers are set, with Johnson seemingly securing the sixth spot after he got the day off on Saturday against the Texans. Smith played the whole game, which isn’t always a great sign for a player in the preseason finale, but he was productive and still provides value on offense and special teams as the seventh receiver and return…
