Collective effort: Quarterback Russell Wilson didn’t see a lot of playing time in Saturday’s preseason loss to the Detroit Lions, but it took no time for him to get the offense into the end zone.
Wilson engineered the opening drive of the game, taking the Steelers 60 yards on five plays in 2:13. Cordarrelle Patterson took it in from 31-yards out to give the Steelers a 7-0 lead before Wilson headed to the sidelines for the remainder of the game.
Wilson completed his only two pass attempts for 26 yards, including a 32-yard completion to George Pickens along the sideline.
“I thought we did a really good job as a collective effort on offense, how we move the ball,” said Wilson. “Obviously, George doing a great job on that third and 11 conversion. He ran a great route, great protection. It was a great team effort. I thought our guys, the 1’s did a really good job of getting up and down the field, which is what we wanted. I knew that we were able to do that. We’ve had a really great training camp and OTAs and all that. So, we finally put it on the field under the lights.”
Wilson said the key to getting the ball in the end zone this week, after not being able to do so against the Buffalo Bills last week, was about staying on schedule.
“Last week we just didn’t stay on schedule. This time we did,” said Wilson. “I think another part of it, too, was I told you guys earlier in the week, the best part is to be able to celebrate in the end zone with your teammates. That’s what this game is all about. Just get in there and do that. We’ve got a lot more work to do, and we’ve got to keep our heads down and keep going.”
Wilson said after the first series Coach Mike Tomlin told him on the sideline that he was done, and he was good with whatever was asked of him after getting the ball in the end zone.
