Washington selected Perine with the No. 114 overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft, making him the ninth running back taken that year.
Here’s what NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein wrote about Perine in his pre-draft breakdown, which made the comparison to former Falcons and Chargers running back Michael Turner:
“Perine is a physical runner who can create additional yardage through power and can be a complimentary “banger” for a team who already has a slasher…He delivers a message when he finishes runs…Not a typical third down option, but has the soft hands out of backfield to be a solid screen and check-down option.”
Considering what Perine has done in the years since, it appears that Zierlein was spot on.
4. Perine’s cousin, La’Mical, spent last season with the Chiefs.
If Perine’s surname sounds familiar, that’s because it is. His cousin, La’Mical, appeared in five games for Kansas City last year, which included a start in the Chiefs’ regular-season finale against Los Angeles. Perine recorded 109 yards from scrimmage in that game, marking a career-best.
La’Mical signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in May, but now – just a few months later – Samaje is a Chief.
5. While at Oklahoma, Perine rushed for the most yards in a single game in FBS history.
Perine was a star for the Oklahoma Sooners from 2014-2016, rushing for at least 1,000 yards in each of his three seasons in Norman. He burst on the scene with 1,713 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns in 2014, quickly establishing himself as one of the top players in all of college football. In fact, Perine’s 427 rushing yards on November 22 of that year remain the most in a single game in FBS history.
He went on to record a 1,000-yard season in each of the following two campaigns before heading to the NFL in 2017, and all these years later, Perine is now a member of the back-to-back…
