Cal Defense Forces Five Turnovers In Impressive Road Victory

AUBURN, Ala. – The California football team forced five turnovers and freshman wide receiver Nyziah Hunter scored two more touchdowns as the Golden Bears knocked off Auburn 21-14 on Saturday afternoon at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Cornerback Nohl Williams registered two interceptions while Ja’ir Smith and Lu-Magia Hearns also picked off Auburn quarterback Payton Thorne for the Bears, who avenged a 14-10 loss at home last season to the Tigers and have now won four of their past five games against SEC opponents.

Quarterback Fernando Mendoza went 25-for-36 with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Cal did not commit a turnover and has given it up just once through two games this season.

The Tigers scored on the game’s first possession but Cal answered immediately on Hunter’s first scoring catch from Mendoza, a 19-yard play that tied the game at 7-7. Hunter gave the Bears (2-0) the lead for good early in the second quarter with a 13-yard scoring reception.

Defense dominated both sides for most of the second half before running back Jaivian Thomas broke off a 32-yard touchdown run to push Cal’s advantage to 21-7 with 11:27 to go. Auburn trimmed the deficit to 21-14 at the 6:06 mark of the fourth quarter, but the Bears’ defense held the rest of the way.

Linebacker Teddye Buchanan dominated the game for Cal, registering 11 tackles and two sacks.

The Bears return home to California Memorial Stadium next Saturday to host San Diego State at 7:30 p.m. The game will air on ESPN.
